Our Kitchen

Here are a couple pictures of my kitchen. These pictures were taken in August, my kitchen doesn't look as clean as it does in this picture at the moment. So, enjoy the pictures, more house pictures to come...
My favorite part of the kitchen; the pantry and the fridge.

Sweetie

This little bundle of fur joined our household in August as I recall. She has been great, she is a sweet little cat. She readily became Zoe's playmate, which allowed us to be move from being Zoe's all day playmates to her caretakers. The change was amazing. The kittens first night was a little vicious, but by the next day they were getting along very well. They still chase each other around the house and they are very cute when the jump from high places to surprise the other cat. They snuggle each other a lot, here is a picture of the snuggling caught on camera.

Happy Anniversary!

Today is my Mom and Dad's 29th Anniverary!! They are somewhere having fun!! They just recently told me one of their dreams/goals is to go away for their Anniversary every year! They deserve it! Thanks Mom and Dad for being great parents and for loving each other! Have fun where ever you went and hope to talk to you soon! Did anyone notice that I used an exclamation mark at the end of each sentence!

New Addition to Our Household

Our little kitty finally has a name. Everyone this is Zoe. It took us about a month and a half to name this little squirt. She joined our family on June 12th and has been called many a name. Some of her names: Bitey, The Nibbler, Psycho Puss, I even started to call her Cassie 2 (for those who don't know, we had a previous cat named Cassie, not saying that Zoe was anything like her.) Zoe has a white ring around her tail, so I jokingly suggested that we call her Ringworm. Well, that name was rejected immediately as it came out of my mouth. I hope that if and when we have children that we will be more prompt with the naming, I guess when the time comes we will have a few months to figure out a name for the babe. I read today that a couple took two years to name their first baby and were only prompted when the second baby arrived. They called them "big baby" and "little baby", until they finally named them after their grandfathers. I pray that there are no adverse effects on the "big baby", at least he can always fall back on as a conversation starter "Hey, look at me, it took my parents two years to name me and see how I turned out."

California Wedding

My beautiful sister, was married in August in California to a great guy! Here are a few snaps from the wedding.

Getting all glammed up for her wedding.

This is the wedding party.

This is our family.

The girl's with shades on.

After the wedding, and before the reception, we found a school playground and took a bunch of pictures.

Overdue House Update

Ok, we know, it has been a while since we posted anything about the house. Well, the wait is over, here are some more pictures.

Here we were putting the foil covered styrofoam on the outside of the house. Makes the house nice and shiny!

The windows are in, yippee! It was quite nice to have all the windows and 2 out of 3 doors in the house before we went to California for a week for Vicki's sister's wedding. I was much more relaxed knowing that our house was sealed tight.

Windows and the patio door in the back of the house. You can also see the HUGE deck stinger that I bolted onto the back of the house. What can I say, we like the idea of a big deck.

Here is a picture of my Dad and his Uncle Peter working on the vinyl siding of my house. Together the did all the siding on our house. We are very grateful for the hard work that they put in and the great job that they did.

Here we are working on the getting ready to pour the basement floor. We have put an inch and a half of styrofoam down that will be under the concrete, and now were are tying in the heat pipe to give us that nice warm basement floor. Hopefully we can pour the floor very soon.

Up It Goes

And now time for the most fun part of building house, the framing. This part goes nice and quick and every day you see progress and feel really good for what you have done. On the July long weekend, I started puting the floor on. This took a while but with Vicki off to BC for the weekend, I had a lot of free time.

Before we finished the floor joists, it occurred to us that we should get the big bundle of extra blocks out of the basement in one piece. For this we used our trusty BFC (Big Farm Crane). It worked quite well actually.

I sent this picture to work with Vicki and apparantly the people at Westfield thought this was quite an unique use of their product.

After the floor was finished, up went the walls.

After the exterior walls were finished, we decided to work on the interior walls since it was going to be a few days before our trusses showed up.

Finally the trusses showed up and we were able to start on the roof, the first part went up really quickly.

But after that, the job got a little harder. Some badly made trusses and a confusing blueprint made the front section of the roof much more difficult. However, we were able to conquer these difficulties.

As you can see, there are already bundles of shingles on the roof. We shingled the north side of the roof as soon as the sheeting was done. This was even before we had finished framing the south side of the roof. Then as soon as we had the south side ready, we shingled that. The roof went on very quickly.

Thanks to Sticks and E-Squared who did the majority of the roofing work. Also thanks to Joe and my Dad for their help with the roofing.

Well enough for now, there is more happening every day, actually lots has happened since the last picture on this post but hopefully I can get more pictures up soon.

Basement Fun!

It hasn't been that long since our last post yet things have been happening at a very rapid pace. What we may have not mentioned during our last post is that when our basement was getting dug, we were busy moving out of our house and into Shaun's parents basement. We decided that living with them would be a better choice than trying to build and rent another house at the same time. And we are hoping that it doesn't take us too long to build so a temporary housing solution would be best. So, in all the fun and craziness of moving, we started working on our house. You already saw the hole that was dug, now to put something in it. The day after hole was finished, we started putting up the footing.

We had a really good start and were feeling very good about things until first thing on Saturday morning, about 3 hours before the cement was supposed to show up and we ran into our first setback of the project.

It seems that overnight, part of the dirt on the east side of our hole had caved in and demolished our forming on that side. Thankfully we were able to get a backhoe in to clean out all the dirt and our great crew of volunteers were able to get things back the way they were supposed to just as the cement trucks arrived.

The pour went quite well and it wasn't long before it was all done.

A big thank you goes out to all the people who helped us pour our footing, they may not have all been professionals, but they all worked hard and made things happen and we are very thankful for all of them.

After the footing was done and the forming cleaned up, we decided it would be best to put all the gravel in and around the footing as well as install all the drain tile and sump pit. This way, if there would be a large rain we would be able to quickly pump out the basement and keep working.

At first we thought it was going to be a lot of work to move all that rock into the basement, but thanks to Erik and the generosity of his and Amber's Uncle Ray, he was able to borrow a small tractor with a loader that made things easier. (Even though it was still a lot of work.)

After the gravel work was done, it was time to start playing with Lego! Well, it might not have been Lego but it was similar in many ways. We used Logix styrofoam forms to build our basement walls. These forms consist of many pieces of styrofoam blocks that lock together and then you pour the cement into them. Them are easier and more fun to setup than normal forms and result in a better, more insulated basement.

It took us a few days to get the styrofoam all setup. It seems like it should be easy, just place one block over the other and don't line up your joints. But as soon as you have to put rebar in every level, build and reinforce window openings, setup bracing and scaffolding, it ends up taking a while.

Finally we were ready to pour. At 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning, the cement trucks arrived as well as a very large concrete pump. This pump makes pouring basements like this much safer and easier.

The pour went quite well, despite some tense moments. It was quite stressful, especially after the guy running the pumper told me that he poured a Logix basement the day before and they had 2 corners of the basement break open. We tried to go slow and not put too much pressure on the forms, and we were alert enough to catch any problem spots and fix them before they became disasters.

We almost got ourselves into trouble again with our falling dirt walls, it seemed that we parked the pumper too close to the edge of the basement hole and the pressure from the weight of the pumper was starting to cause dirt to fall against our walls. This could have caused us major problems if a large enough section of dirt caved in to damage our walls, but thankfully, we caught it in time and moved the pumper to a safer distance before anything bad happened. When it was all said and done, we had a nicely poured and pretty square basement to look proudly at.

A very big thank you goes out to Erik and my Dad, they have spent a lot of time helping me with the project so far and their time and efforts are very appreciated. Well, that's as far as we are right now, so consider yourselves up to date. We will try to keep this posted but it is hard to find the time when there is so much work to do.

Movin' On Up!

As you may or may not have heard, we are building a house. We have been talking about it and planning it for a number of months now but today we really started to see something happen. We purchased the lot last week and have been getting ready to start building ever since. Today we got the excavator in and dug the basement. We hope to pour the concrete footing for the basement walls in the next day or so. It is quite exciting to actually see something happen instead of just looking at your house on paper.

Here you can see the basement partially dug.

Here the hole is almost completed, they just need to dig the ramp down from the front so we can drive a tractor or a skidsteer into the hole. We will try to have some more pictures as the building process continues in the next couple of days.
